Planners in Portland frequently debate the costs and benefits of the the industrial sanctuary in the inner-eastside. On one hand, the area is prime real estate that could generate more tax revenue if it allowed residential or more retail. On the other hand, the city needs the jobs that the industrial zone provides. Allowing residential would raise the property value (and therefore property taxes), forcing the small businesses out.
I visited my friends’ businesses at the corner of 3rd & Ankeny. Grove manufactures iPad and iPhone cases out of bamboo. Twenty people are employed by the business.
I also visited Keegan Meegan & Company. They make custom letterpress prints for businesses, weddings and musicians.
