  • Safe Routes

In Spring 2011, I worked with Kelly Moosbrugger and Liz Paterson on a GIS project for Portland’s Safe Routes to Schools, a program that encourages kids and their parents to choose to walk or bike to school rather than drive. As a result of our recommendations the City allocated bike parking to underserved areas of Portland.

Our study is part of a larger process to restore the once high rate of walking and biking in the United States. The rise of diabetes and obesity rates among school-age children, the growing importance of lowering vehicle usage and emissions, and the desire to enhance the community feel of schools provided the impetus behind the project.
