Michael Michaux of the Toowong Rotary Club invited me to Rachel Smith’s presentation on sustainable transport. She discussed her findings from researching at the BMW Guggenheim Lab. BMW is looking into increasing accessibility to cars but not necessarily ownership. The future, she said, is sharing.
She asked about Portland’s programs. Car2go allows people to look up car locations on their smart phones, walk to the car, swipe their card, and drive to their destination. Getaround is a peer-to-peer car sharing program. If you own a car that you don’t use all the time, you can rent it out to your neighbors and still be covered by insurance.
